CASE STUDY: Fine-Art Photographer
Tasha O'Neill Photography

Fall, 2003

Part 1

This project began with photographs. Lots of photographs. The centerpiece was six sets of ten cards each; the first concept involved a large photograph surrounded by smaller ones. So the six "Card Set pages" came first. The large background photo would necessarily be rather weighty in web terms, and with the ten smaller images, the page would already take more time to load for dial-up visitors than one might wish. But this is about beautiful photography, so the trade-off was deemed appropriate. Then, in order to give visitors a more detailed view of the individual photos in the collection, we used a favorite script (Javascript) for a popup function. As an example, click on the second image (with the orange background), to see what a browser shows when an image is clicked.

Though simple navigation links to the rest of the site are available at each page bottom, these pages are designed specifically to encourage the viewing of other Card Set pages: the sparse text provides links only to order the set being viewed and to view the next or previous page in the series. Clicking the order link leads to the order form with the item already selected.

After the design for the Card Set Pages was approved, we worked on a look for all the rest, one that wouldn't compete too much, visually, while still retaining the "look and feel" of the site overall. Click here for more.
